The Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya was established in the year 1963. The Department of Medicine is one of the academic departments of the faculty with its clinical teaching facility at the then Universiti Hospital (now Universiti Malaya Medical Centre). Universiti Hospital was officially opened in 1968 by His Majesty Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Dipertuan Agong Tuanku Ismail Nasarudin Shah Ibnu Alharmahum Sultan Zainal Abidin.
Since its inception, the Department of Medicine continued to expand its services anad research initiatives, including establishing one of the first Coronary Care Unit in 1970. In 1973, a revision course in medicine was held for MRCP (UK) Part 1 exam candidates. The department's role in teaching activities, medical research and patient care continued to grow and was one of the first departments to introduce new disciplines and was recognized as the training centre for nine subspecialities by 1994.
Department of Medicine has been instrumental in the development of the medical undergraduate course (MBBS), bearing the philosophy that the integration of basic and applied sciences should begin early and continue throughout. The department also conducts a four year Master training programme in Internal Medicine (MMED) in keeping with the increasing prominence of postgraduate activity directed at professional training.
