From December 2022, the Master of Internal Medicine has adopted a new curriculum, National Postgraduate Medicine Curriculum (NPMC). The National Postgraduate Medicine Curriculum for Internal Medicine is the culmination of collaborative effort between the Jawatankuasa Kepakaran Bersama Perubatan Dalaman Institut Pengajian Tinggi Awam (JKBPD IPTA) or known as "Internal Medicine Conjoint Board", Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH). It provides a structured and unified curriculum for the training of Internal Medicine specialists throughout the country and is aligned with the national strategy for healthcare. This standardisation of Internal Medicine specialist training for Malaysia aims to drive forward high quality, effective and safe patient care.

The Jawatankuasa Kepakaran Bersama Perubatan Dalaman Institut Pengajian Tinggi Awam (JKBPD IPTA) or known as "Internal Medicine Conjoint Board" is responsible for conducting the training programe.

  1. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of the University or an equivalent medical qualification of university approved by the Senate;

    And
     

Minimun one year of clinical experience after graduation of undergraduate degree and obtained full registration with Malaysian Medical Council.

Other requirements
a. Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; and
b. Obtained a satisfactory result in the entry examination (MEDEX) or has obtained MRCP Part 1 

 

  1. Candidates who are for non-Malaysian citizens 
    a. Have to fulfil the requirement of Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)  600; or
    b. Obtains a minimum of band 6.0 for International English Testing System (IELTS)

 The programme of study comprises three stages:

Stage I (First Year):
i) Study of basic sciences relevant to the practice of internal medicine; 
and 

ii) Clinical clerkship under supervision with emphasis on emergency medicine / acute medicine

Stage II (Year 2 and 3):
i) Rotational postings of three months duration each in the following seven disciplines of internal medicine:
 
Cardiology, Nephrology, Neurology, Respiratory Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Haematology and Oncology, Endocrinology 
and 
one month each for Rheumatology, Infectious Diseases and Dermatology 

ii) Conduct a research project

Stage III (Year 4)

a) Choice of posting in an approved subspecialty or general medicine in the Faculty or a recognised centre outside the Faculty

Rules
- No candidate shall be permitted to proceed to Stage II or Stage III unless they obtained satisfactory for their annual portfolio review
- No candidate shall permitted to proceed to Stage III unless he / she passed Internal Medicine Qualifying Assessment (IMQA).
