SERVICE / SECTION

The unit is made up of senior consultants and trainees in general endocrinology and diabetes. Together with our multi-disciplinary team comprised of professionals from Chemical Pathology, Histopathology, Radiology, Endocrine Surgery, Neuro-Surgery, Nuclear Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Dietetics & specialist nursing (diabetes education/ foot care); we collaboratively manage a range of endocrine disorders including:

  • Pituitary Disorders
  • Thyroid Disorders
  • Adrenal Diseases
  • Metabolic Bone Health
  • Sexual & Reproductive Health
  • Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
  • Obesity

Clinical Care 

Inpatient :

a. Endocrine Ward(Ward 11UB, Menara Utama)

The ward service is dedicated to the care of patients with acute endocrine emergencies, complex endocrine conditions or specialised endocrine testing requiring inpatient assessment and treatment.

b. Endocrine Consultations provided to other Medical and Non-medical Units

As part of the Hospital's comprehensive healthcare delivery, we provide consultations on acute endocrine-related issues that may arise for patients admitted to the hospital for causes that are not primarily endocrine in aetiology. We work closely with other specialities to assess and optimise outcomes for inpatient care. 

c. Diabetes Liason Unit (DLU)

The DLU team is focused on receiving inpatient referrals for patients requiring optimisation of glycaemic control and /or long term management of diabetes mellitts, for patients admitted to the hospital for causes that are not primarily endocrine in aetiology.

d. Day Care Unit ;  Menara Timur

This is where we carry out specialised endocrine testing protocols including short cosyntropin test, saline suppression test; as well as daycare therapy eg. the infusion of IV zolendronate etc.

Multi disciplinary consultations for people living with Type 1 Diabetes on intensive insulin therapy, with special focus on insulin pump therapy.

Weight Management Specialist Clinic

1st & 3rd Wednesday, 2.00pm - 5.00pm
A multi-disciplinary clinic striving to deliver holistic, multi component person centred care to people living with obesity without bias or stigmatization. Our panel of experts comprises dietitians, sports medicine specialists, endocrinologists, primary care physicians, psychological counsellors and bariatric surgeons.
Advanced Insulin Education Programme Clinic
Thursdays (8.00 am – 12.00 pm)
Consultations for people living with Type 2 Diabetes, with special focus on patients with suboptimal controlled diabetes and/or intensive insulin therapy

Combined Endocrine Antenatal Clinic

Multi-disciplinary consultations for pregnant women with Endocrine Disorders (Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, Thyroid Disorders in pregnancy etc.)

Transitional Clinic

Wednesdays 8.00am - 12.00pm
This clinic is conducted at the Diabetes Care Unit, tailored for young patients transitioning from Paediatric Endocrinology to Adult Endocrinology clinic with conditions such as Type 1 Diabetes, Congenital Endocrine Disorders etc.

Diabetes Care Unit (Lobby Floor , Menara Selatan)

The Diabetes Care Unit (DCU) is a speciallised unit, spearheaded by the members of the Endocrine Unit, focused on delivering holistic, multi- disciplinary inpatient and outpatient care for people living with diabetes.

These include consultations for diabetes management, as well as assessment and treatment of diabetes-related complications with an underlying ethos of a one-stop centre concept.The services provided include consultations for diabetes management, as well as assessment and treatment of complications and foot-care. Our foot care service in particular, received accreditation from the International Diabetes Federation in 2012. Together with a team of specialised food care nurses/diabetes nurse educators, experts from rehabilitation medicine and orthopaedics, we conduct weekly foot care rounds for patients with diabetes foot ulcers and those at risk of ulceration, with the ultimate aim of preventing disability/ saving limbs from amputation. DCU also assists patients requiring highly specialized clinical services such as insulin  pump therapy and CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitoring).

Last but not least, we aim to provide people living with diabetes with the skills and support for diabetes self management via structured patient education programs delivered by our specialist educators. The unit is equipped with state of the art equipment including Fundus Camera, Biothesiometer, Doppler Ultrasound for assessing peripheral arterial circulation and Artificaial Intelligence Aided Echocardiography.

Medical Education

As part of the team in the Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine the unit is actively involved in crafting and delivering a curriculum that encompasses teaching of important endocrine disorders for undergaraduate and post-graduate medical students. This comprises regular lectures, tutorials and bedside clinical teaching sessions. The unit is also invested in fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement even among junior doctors, ultimately enhancing the quality of patient care and promoting excellence in the management of diverse endocrine conditions. Conducted by a panel of expert endocrinologists, the following programs are tailored for junior clinicians (medical officers, house officers) as well as endocrinology trainees ;

  • Continuous Medical Education (CME) Tuesdays (10.30 am - 12.00 pm)
Presentations on cases with complex endocrine disorders, followed by detailed discussions around the relevant topic with a focus on teaching, learning and updates on current evidence 

  • Grand Ward Round ; Wednesdays (10.30 am - 12.00 pm)

Discussion of difficult and complex cases in endocrinology with a panel of expert endocrinologists and a focus on collaborative decision-making to optimize patient outcomes

  • Endo-Radiology Conference ; Every 2 months (Friday 8.00 am - 9.30 am)

Multi-disciplinary engagement with a panel of expert subspecialty consultant Radiologists with discussions focused on radiological and nuclear imaging in patients with neuroendodcrine, adrenal, thyroid disorders etc.

  • Mock Viva Voce Sessions - Sessions tailores for endocrinology fellows in advanced tarining, conducted by a panel of expert endocrinologists i in preparation for Endocrine viva exit exams

  • Masters Teaching

Conducted by Endocrine consultants/specialists, these sessions are tailored for cancidates enrolled in post-graduate training (Masters/ MRCP) who are involved in 3-monthly rotations with the unit
